Moussa Kone scored in either half to put Senegal in the final of the 19th edition of the African U-20 Championship where they will take on Nigeria in the decisive match of the tournament. Midfielder Alassane Diallo scored in between for the Malians.
The Senegalese caused one of the biggest upsets when they beat the tournament favourites Mali who were the only unbeaten team in the competition. The Eaglets will face the Satellites in the first match for third place on Sunday.
In the first minute ‘Les Lionceaux’ took the lead Kone who slotted a rebound into the net after Mali keeper Sory Ibrahim Traore mis-handled a shot by El Hadji Niang.
Mali leveled the score after three minutes with a fast counter-attack that saw Diallo slotting a powerful shot into the corner of the net.
‘Les Lionceaux’ who were boosted by continuous drumming and singing by a huge band of supporters took control of the match with Orange Man of the Match Sidy Sarr, Kone, Niang and Ibrahim Wadji mounting attack upon attack on the Malian defence.
Senegal held on to their lead that earned them a historic spot in the final of the African U-20 Championship and for the first time the final of a major continental championship since 2002 Africa Cup of Nations in Mali where the Teranga Lions lost to Cameroon on penalties.
