Nigeria got a commanding start in the CAF U-17 Championship 2015 by defeating the hosts 2-0 with Victor Osimhen 18th minute and Captain Kelechi Nwakali’s thunderous free-kick from outside the box in a very thrilling opening game at the Stade Seyni Kountche in Niamey.
Niger muscled the two – time Champions when Souradjou Alhassane fired close just before half-time but failed to beat Nigeria Goal-keeper Akpan Udoh.
The second half saw the Nigeriens rally to get back into the game with striker Ibrahim Issoufou the main threat but the Eaglets fortified their defence and collected all three points. Niger now face a ‘must-win’ berth against co-debuttants Zambia in their second Group A fixture.
Stade Seyni Kountche staged a splendid opening ceremony highlighting Niger’s culture and traditions. The ceremony was graced by President Mahamadou Issoufou, CAF President Dr. Issa Hayatou, CAF Executive Committee Members of and Members of the Organizing Committee of the CAF U -17 championship, Niger.
