An astonishing goal from Belgium – based Central defender gave Senegal a 2-0 victory over Tunisia in Dakar on Tuesday as the “Les Lionceaux” move closer to qualification for the Olympic Games 2016 Football Tournament in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Ibrahima Diedhiou powered shot from the centre circle over goalkeeper Sabri Ben Hassen into the Tunisian net in the ninth minute. This was the second time in two games that Tunisian Keeper was beaten by a long-range shot.
Substitute Mouhamadou ‘Habib’ Diallo assured Senegal of a victory with a close-range strike from a cross five minutes from time before a near-capacity crowd at the 60,000-seat LSS stadium. It was a well-deserved victory for the hosts over the Tunisians whose persistent fouls and time wasting reduced an expected showpiece into a lackluster showdown.
This victory earned the “Les Lionceaux”a place in the semi-finals of the two-week tournament with the top three qualifying for the Rio Games.
Senegal will play their last Group A match on Friday against Zambia who have been eliminated having lost to Tunisia and South Africa who survived a scare to defeat Zambia 3-2 in the first match of a double-header. A draw against Tunisia in M’bour on Friday will earn South Africa a berth in the semi-finals on goals scored.
Match day 4 features a Group B double-header in M’bour on Wednesday with Algeria taking on Mali to be followed by Egypt vs Nigeria.
