A brace from Wilfried Bony helped take the Ivory Coast into the last four of the Africa Cup of Nations on Sunday with a 3-1 win over Algeria.
Manchester City’s new signing Bony was quiet during the group stage in Equatorial Guinea but sparked off to earn the Elephants victory in this quarter-final berth. He headed in his first goal of the competition in the 26th minute to put the Elephants in the lead and then another header midway through the second half after Hilal Soudani had equalised for Algeria.
The wiggy Gervinho, coming out of suspension, put the “final nail on the coffin” to make sure of the win at the death as the Ivory Coast take revenge for their dramatic defeat to Algeria in extra-time at the same stage of the African Nations’ Cup, Angola 2010.
Ivory Coast will now play DR Congo in the semi-finals in Bata on Wednesday as they seek to win another continental title since1992 in Senegal.
The winner will take on either Ghana or Equatorial Guinea in the grand final.
