Both teams played fast counter-attacking football throughout the game only to be decimated when Mamadou Sangare scored a 49th minute volley to give Mali the lead. Sidiki Maiga was denied a second goal in the 58th minute with a clean save from Keeper Cedric Tchotcheu before Martin Hongla equalised on the hour mark as the two teams displayed great skills and very entertaining football.
Sekou Koita struck home a beautiful goal from close range to put Mali ahead with 12 minutes after which Boubacar Traore rounded Keeper Tchotcheu to yield all three points to Mali.
In the first Group B match defending champions Cote d’Ivoire came from two goals down to draw 2 -2 with South Africa.
