‘Les Mourabitones’ beat Sierra Leone on Saturday in Nouakchott by 2 – 0 to advance to the first round of the Africans Nations Championship (CHAN) Rwanda 2016 qualifiers.
Two goals in the first-half within a spate of two minutes by Mohamed Yali and Boubacar Beyguili was all Mauritania needed to secure their place at the final round of the Zone West A qualifiers of the championship which is exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.
Both legs between the two teams were played in Nouakchott due to a home ban imposed on Sierra Leone following the outbreak of the Ebola virus last year. Sierra Leone could not recover from the quick first half goals thus allowing Mauritania to complete a double over their West Zone mates to progress 4-1 on aggregate.
Yali broke the deadlock in the 34th minute from a poor clearance by the Leone Stars defence following a shot by Samba Moussa from a free-kick and fire home a whisky shot in a packed defence. Two minutes later, Mauritania doubled the lead through Beyguili from a long-range shot by Mauritania Keeper Souleymane Diallo around the centre mark that caught his Sierra Leonean counterpart Ibrahim Kamara off guard bouncing off the post for Beyguili to connect home the second chance.
Mauritania will take on the winner of Mali – Guinea Bissau encounter at the final qualifying round. The final tournament will be held from January 16 – February 7, 2016 in Rwanda.
