In the return leg of the much-dubbed Senegambian derby, The Teranga Lions again won 1-0 on Saturday in the Independence Stadium, Bakau to complete a double over the Scorpions of The Gambia and advance to the first round of the qualifying matches for African Nations Championship, Rwanda 2016.
Senegal stunned the home crowd when Mouhamad Waliou Ndoye’s header rattled pass the Scorpions Keeper Christopher Allen from a set piece after seven minutes.
The visitors almost doubled their lead in when play-maker Abdoulaye Ba dribbled his way through the Scorpions’ defence only to be denied by Allen after which a 20-yard strike from Boubacar Cissokho was saved by the top woodwork in the 15th and 17th minutes respectively.
Emil Sambou, one of seven add-ons in The Gambian team saw his glancing header from Modou Jatta’s cross went wide to the frustration of the home fans that turn up in their large numbers at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. Scorpions’ Abdoulie Jallow marveled at a missed opportunity in the 23rd minute when he shoved his way through the visitors’ defence and chose to pass the ball to his team mate instead of taking on the opportunity with only the Goalkeeper to beat.
With a 4-1 aggregate score over The Gambia, Senegal will now take on the winner of Liberia – Guinea at the final round.
