The Gambia National team arrived in Dakar last night after a week’s preparatory camp in Casablanca, Morocco ahead of this weekend’s African Nations Championship (CHAN) qualifier against Senegal on Saturday, 20 June 2015 at 17:00 hrs at Stade Demba Diop, Dakar.
The delegation was welcomed at the Airport by a Vice President of the Senegal Football Federation, The General Secretary of WAFU Zone A, Protocol Officers from The Gambia Embassy in Senegal and Gambia FF.
A 35- man provisional squad Scorpions led by ex-national Coach Peter Bonu Johnson left Banjul last Friday evening for Casablanca, where they held a week’s training camp.
Whilst in Casablanca, the Scorpions played a friendly with the Moroccan Olympic team last Monday (15 June 2015), which they lost by 3-1 with midfielder Modou Sarr scoring the consolation goal for them.
The second leg will take place in Banjul on the weekend of 3-5 July 2015 at the Independence Stadium in Bakau. The winner will face either Liberia or Guinea at the next round of the qualifiers for the fourth edition of the tournament designed exclusively for footballers playing in their domestic leagues.
Gambia has never qualified for the CHAN tournament whilst Senegal have one participation to their name, maiden edition in 2009 in Cote d’Ivoire.
Rwanda will host the final tournament from January 16 – February 7 2016.
