In a sombre mood, the entire Stade Caroline Faye in Mbour paid homage by observing a minute silence in memory of the late Mawade Wade who was a Member of the CAF Executive Committee and served football for so many years.
In a packed stadium, in the presence of the Mayor of Mbour, Vice Presidents and Secretary General of the Senegalese FF and the WAFU General Secretary amongst many other dignitaries, Senegal U-20 took on Mali U-20 in the first leg of a two-team tournament organised by WAFU Zone A. After a very fascinating display of skills by both teams, the game ended Senegal 1-1 Mali. An own goal in the second half cancelled the visitor’s first – half lead. Though Mali constantly taunted the Senegal defense , the resilience of the Senegalese National team paid off when they mounted pressure on their guests and eventually had a Malian defender off-guard who sliced the ball into his own net from a corner kick.
The second-leg (final) match will be played on Sunday December 7, 2014 at the same stadium at 17:00 hrs. The winner will be awarded the Mawade Wade Memorial Trophy.
